The Biocyclic Vegan Standard is the first ever organic production guidelines adapted to both, stock-free agriculture and Mediterranean small scale agriculture and exceeds in many essential aspects the minimum requirements set by Reg. (EU) 834/2007. Taking into consideration the fact that largely intact ecosystems can be still found in Greece, the Biocyclic Vegan Standard aims to maintain or create species-rich habitats and natural "vital circles" (greek: bios+kyklos) by increasing the content of organic substance in soils with predominantly little humus, a practice which positively influences both, bio-energetic and organoleptic attributes of food. Moreover, buying biocyclic vegan products is a contribution to maintaining small scale family driven operations as they are characteristic of Greek and Cypriot agriculture.
Production and processing of biocyclic vegan olives and olive oil are subject to strict requirements set by the Biocyclic Vegan Standard. Thus, within the olive grove the producer is obliged to take special measures for the enhancement of biodiversity. Planting different kinds of trees in the same plot or extensive soil cultivation not before natural germination of taste relevant wild herbs that grow under or between the trees has taken place, are just examples of how biocyclic vegan cultivation techniques enhance biological soil activity and self healing processes in nature.
The Standard elaborated by organic pioneer Adolf Hoops (1932-1999) and Dr. agr. Johannes Eisenbach cover also processing and traceability issues. Biocyclic vegan olive oil has to originate from one producer only ("single-farm-product"), which means that the oil which comes to the market is not composed by a mixture of different partitions. Thus, the individual character of each olive grove can be preserved revealing a unique and distinctive taste of oil.
Another characteristic of biocyclic vegan cultivation techniques is the usage of olive leaves and olive cake for preparing high quality compost, which is spread as a ripe substrate under the olive trees. By this the cycle of nutrients is closed, thus giving back to the root system those components that strongly influence the vitality of the tree.
Except from EU certification bodies, all biocyclic vegan olive groves as well as the olive mill and the bottling unit are controlled by BIO-HELLAS (GR-BIO-03) and DIO (GR-BIO-01) according to the Biocyclic Vegan and Naturland-Standards.
Biocyclic vegan olive oil won first place in the Olive Oil Award at BioFach 2014 and received again a recommendation at BioFach 2015 as well as in 2016 . Read more...
