The 5 key principles of the Biocyclic Vegan Standard
100 % organic operation.
The whole farm that cultivates products according to the Biocyclic Vegan Standard must be organic.
No manure or other inputs of animal origin.
Biocyclic vegan operations do not use manure or any other kind of agricultural inputs derived from animals or parts of them. Instead, compost on the base of plant materials, e.g. from olive cake, or humus soil is used in combinat-ion with green manure (incorporating leguminous plants into the soil) and mulching techniques. Any kind of manure, liquid fertilisers of animal origin or processed animal meal from industrial livestock breeding (blood meals, bone meals etc.) or other inputs of animal origin are not allowed in biocyclic vegan farming.
Plant protection starts with the increase of humus through compost.
Biocyclic vegan operations aim at using compost and humus soil as the basic source of nutrients and health stimulants for their cultivations. By that, plant helath can be postively influenced and sprayings with allowed substances against deseases can be reduced to a minimum of applications.
Enhancement of biodiversity.
In biocyclic vegan agriculture mixed culture, very often in combination with green manure and other measures, is applied to foster biodiversity in the fields and groves.
Protected plots.
With the “Biocyclic Farm Index”, the interaction between the fields, the cultures, the environment and the ecosystem, as well as measures and practices taken by the producer in terms of protecting the plots against agrochemicals from conventional agriculture (contamination risk) are measurably monitored and evaluated for every operation as well as for every single plot.
Family driven operations.
Biocyclic vegan agriculture promotes small scale family driven operations. Their existence prevents the expansion of large scale fully mechanised monocultures. Therefore, careful dealing with soil and plants is crucial for the economic results of the operation and for the quality of its products.
